ABSTRACT
Aim
To assess the knowledge and attitudes of a group of pregnant women regarding the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, to improve their oral health and that of their children.
Background
The first thousand days of a baby’s life, spanning from conception to two years of age, are marked by rapid development and the establishment of critical elements such as the gastrointestinal and oral microbiome. This period is crucial for fostering healthy habits that will positively impact the future adult’s health profile.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 54 pregnant women. Data were collected using a survey previously validated through expert review and pilot testing.
Results
Of the participants, 66.7% did not monitor their oral health during pregnancy. The majority of those who did (27.8%) sought preventive care. While 86.95% brushed their teeth 2-3 times per day, only 50% used fluoride toothpaste and 88.9% were unaware of the ppm (parts per million) of fluoride in it. Additionally, 55.6% received guidance on feeding and oral care for their future babies.
Conclusion
There appears to be a notable lack of information among pregnant women regarding both their own oral health and that of their future babies. This is partly attributed to insufficient support from healthcare professionals during pregnancy.
Statistics
Descriptive statistics were applied, the chi-square test and Student’s t-test. Statistical significance was set as p<0.05, with a 95% confidence interval.
